This cake is typically vanilla or strawberry. When baking, I opt for 3 thinner layers rather than 2 thick layers that need to be halved. I still end up with the standard 4" tall cake.
My preferred frosting is a Swiss buttercream that can be flavored in practically any flavor. It is smooth and buttery, but tends to be a bit soft at room temperature. It does have a pearl-like look to it, depending on the color.

Black Forrest Cake (Seasonal)
This is a wonderful recipe that isn't overly sweet, but has a nice kick because it is made with Kirschwasser. Inside are Kirsh soaked cherries with a light frosting. The outside frosting is a whipped cream flavored with the cherry liqueur. This is only available when cherries are in season.
(kirsch is a clear, colorless brandy traditionally made from double distillation of morello cherries, a dark-colored cultivar of the sour cherry. However, it is now also made from other kinds of cherries. The cherries are fermented completely, including their stones.)
It CAN be done without the alcohol, but it won't be as good. Subtract $10 for alcohol free.

Blueberry-lemon cake decorated simply (left pic/above via mobile) with a lemon slice and fresh blueberries. Inside is a blueberry-lemon cake, lemon curd between the layers, and the frosting is a blueberry cream cheese frosting.

I have 8" square pans and a half sheet pan.
I quote prices based on ingredients and number of servings for those not listed here and custom cakes. I am a home baker and therefore purchase everything at retail prices. I do bake fresh and make all my own fillings and frostings.
I can also do custom cakes and mirror glazes.
The number of servings and ingredients used will determine the cost. Fondant cakes cost more generally.

Wedding Cakes
Many Factors go into the cost of a wedding cake. The number of servings, ingredients, and simple vs extravagant decorating, all adding to the cost.
The chocolate wedding cake (above) is my own cake. It cost me a little over $100 in ingredients and flowers. Perhaps $120. It is an 8" on top of a 10" which is approx. 60-62 servings according to the typical charts. At the low end of $3 per serving, you can see that a small cake can easily cost $185+ and that cost has only gone up since 2018
On the cake below, the flowers were some of the wedding flowers (not part of my costs, since they were given to me at set up) and due to the chocolate content (white chocolate frosting and chocolate cake), cost just under $4 a serving.
Wedding cakes can range from $4-$9 a serving depending on the difficulty of the decorating and support needed.
